Why this placement works

Answer one clear campaign question

Two reasonable upsell ideas can perform very differently. BumpZen gives Shopify merchants a structured way to compare campaign variations instead of choosing products, discounts, or messages by intuition alone.

A useful test isolates one meaningful difference—such as the offer product, incentive, or headline—while keeping the audience, trigger, placement, and other campaign details consistent. That makes the result easier to explain and act on.

How it works

Run a test you can interpret

Connect the right product moment to a useful next offer, then use the results to improve it.

  1. 01

    Choose one variable

Decide whether you are comparing products, incentives, or another meaningful variation.

  2. 02

    Create two versions

Use an existing same-surface offer as Variant A, then change one focused element in Variant B.

  3. 03

    Collect comparable traffic

BumpZen assigns eligible sessions approximately evenly and keeps each shopper on a stable variant during the session.

  4. 04

    Read the full result

Compare accept rate first, then check completed conversions and verified revenue before keeping or iterating a variation.

A practical testing guide

What should Shopify merchants A/B test?

Start with a decision that could change what you show shoppers. Each test below isolates a different lever, so the result can lead to a specific next action.

01

Product A vs Product B

Keep the trigger product, placement, audience, copy, and incentive the same. Change only the product being offered. This reveals whether shoppers respond better to one complementary relationship than another—for example, performance socks versus a shoe-care kit after someone adds running shoes.

02

10% discount vs no discount

Offer the same product to the same audience on the same surface, but change the incentive. Do not stop at accept rate: a discount may win more accepts while producing less verified revenue or margin per session. Use the smallest incentive that creates enough incremental value.

03

Headline A vs Headline B

Keep the product, price, placement, and button unchanged. Compare one clear message—such as a practical benefit against a product-pairing cue. A focused copy test tells you whether the framing changed behavior without confusing that effect with a different offer.

04

Cart vs checkout placement

Treat this as a placement comparison, not a native randomized BumpZen A/B test. Standard BumpZen experiments keep both variants on the same surface. To compare cart with checkout, run separate campaigns over matched periods and audiences, account for changes in traffic and order mix, and interpret the result as directional rather than randomized proof.

Sample size and confidence

How much traffic is enough?

There is no universal session count or number of days. The traffic needed depends on your baseline conversion rate, the size of the difference between variants, and how much normal variation your store sees. A dramatic difference can become useful sooner than a small one.

For a standard BumpZen experiment, eligible sessions are assigned approximately 50/50 and the assignment stays stable within the session. Let the test collect more than a handful of views and accepts, and run through a representative business cycle before acting. A weekend promotion, a stockout, or one unusually large order can distort a short result.

For the optional randomized AI lift test, 30 sessions per arm is only the minimum before BumpZen evaluates statistical confidence—it is not a promise that the test is conclusive. BumpZen reports a winner only when the 95% confidence interval excludes no difference; otherwise the result remains inconclusive while more evidence accumulates.

Read the right outcome

Why acceptance rate isn't the same as verified revenue

An accepted upsell records intent. Verified revenue records money tied to an upsell that is confirmed in a completed Shopify order and reflects later cancellations or refunds. Those measures answer different questions.

Acceptance rate
How often shoppers accept after seeing a variant. It is useful for judging immediate appeal.
Verified revenue
How much completed-order revenue the upsell actually contributed after order verification and later adjustments.
Revenue per session
How much verified revenue each assigned session produces on average, including sessions that generated no purchase.

A high-acceptance, low-price offer can lose to a lower-acceptance, higher-value offer. A discount can also increase accepts without increasing net value. Read acceptance as a behavior signal, then use completed conversions and verified revenue to decide whether the variation helped the business.

Inside BumpZen

How BumpZen handles Shopify upsell experiments

BumpZen keeps a standard experiment deliberately focused so you can understand what changed.

  1. Choose an active side-cart or post-purchase offer as Variant A.
  2. Build Variant B around one focus: product, headline, description, button text, pricing or discount, or a full comparison when that broader question is intentional.
  3. BumpZen temporarily replaces the original offer and shows each variant to approximately half of eligible sessions, with a stable assignment during each session.
  4. Compare views, accepts, accept rate, and revenue side by side. BumpZen shows the current leader, but you decide when the evidence is strong enough to keep a winner or continue testing.

BumpZen capabilities

What you can use for this campaign

Campaign strategy

Change one meaningful thing

If the product, copy, discount, placement, and audience all change together, the result cannot tell you what mattered. Keep the test focused enough to produce a useful next action.

  1. 1

Does the test answer one specific question?

  2. 2

Are unrelated elements consistent between variations?

  3. 3

Is there enough traffic to avoid reacting to noise?

Measure the business result

Use data to improve the campaign

Accept rate explains immediate appeal, but it is not the same as a completed purchase. Use conversions and verified revenue to check whether the variation that attracted more accepts also produced more completed-order value.

1 Offer impressions
2 Accepted offers
3 Completed conversions
4 Verified revenue

Common questions

Shopify upsell A/B testing FAQ

What should I A/B test first?

Start with one meaningful difference: Product A versus Product B, 10% discount versus no discount, or Headline A versus Headline B. Keep the audience, trigger, placement, and unrelated campaign details consistent.

How much traffic does a Shopify upsell test need?

There is no universal total. Standard experiments should run beyond a handful of interactions and through representative store traffic. The randomized AI lift test requires at least 30 sessions per arm before confidence is evaluated, but may need more traffic to reach a conclusive result.

Can BumpZen randomize cart versus checkout placement?

Not as one standard A/B experiment. Standard experiments compare variants on the same surface. Compare separate cart and checkout campaigns over matched periods and treat the result as directional because the traffic was not randomly assigned between placements.

Why can the accept-rate leader differ from the revenue leader?

Acceptance records that a shopper took an offer; verified revenue requires a completed Shopify order and reflects later cancellations or refunds. Product price, discount depth, completion rate, and order adjustments can therefore make a lower-acceptance variant more valuable.
